What Irish Law Actually Requires

Written plainly, with the source named so you can check it yourself.

The regulation

First aid at work is covered by Part 7, Chapter 2 (First-aid) of the General Application Regulations 2007, under the 2005 Act. The HSA publishes guidance on how employers should apply it.

What the employer must do

  • Provide first-aid equipment suited to the workplace
  • Appoint enough occupational first-aiders where the risk assessment requires them
  • Make sure first-aid arrangements cover every shift and location
  • Tell employees what the arrangements are

The first steps

  • Danger — make sure the scene is safe
  • Response — check if the casualty responds
  • Airway — open the airway
  • Breathing — check for normal breathing

Awareness vs. occupational first aid

This is first aid awareness training. An appointed occupational first-aider needs a recognised practical course with hands-on skills assessment, which an online course cannot replace.

Be clear about what this course is. It is online first aid awareness training. It does not qualify you as an occupational first-aider — that needs a recognised practical course with hands-on assessment of skills such as CPR.
