Who it’s for

Who Should Take Asbestos Awareness (Category A)

Construction & tradesElectricians, plumbers, carpenters and anyone drilling or cutting into older buildings.
Maintenance & facilitiesCaretakers and building services staff in pre-2000 premises.
Property managersPeople responsible for buildings that may contain asbestos.
Demolition & refurbishmentWorkers who need to recognise asbestos before work starts.
The legal position

What Irish Law Actually Requires

Written plainly, with the source named so you can check it yourself.

The regulation

Work that may expose people to asbestos is governed by the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Exposure to Asbestos) Regulations 2006, S.I. No. 386 of 2006, as amended by S.I. No. 589 of 2010, under the 2005 Act.

What the employer must do

  • Find out whether asbestos is present before work starts
  • Assess the risk and prevent or reduce exposure
  • Give workers who may be exposed adequate information and training
  • Use competent contractors for removal work

If you find it

  • Stop work straight away
  • Do not disturb, sweep or vacuum the material
  • Keep other people away from the area
  • Report it to your supervisor or the person in control

Awareness, not removal

This is awareness-level training: it helps you recognise asbestos and avoid disturbing it. Removing asbestos or working with it needs specialist training, controls and, in many cases, a licensed contractor.

Be clear about what this course is. It is online asbestos awareness training. It does not qualify anyone to remove, repair or work with asbestos-containing materials.
